On the site of a former brewery Tullibardine distillery was opened in 1949 at Blackford in Perthshire not far from Gleneagles. One of the modern distilleries Tomintoul was established in 1964 on Speyside. Used primarily in the Whyte and Mackay blends however in recent years more Tomintoul Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been released both as distillery and independent bottlings. Tomatin Distillery was founded in 1897 and is situated approximately 13 miles south-east of Inverness. Opened as late as 1967 Tamnavulin Distillery is situated in Speyside at Ballindalloch. Used in such blends as Mackinlay’s, Crawfords and Whyte & Mackay from the start the spirit produced has been of a high quality. It was mothballed in 1995 but recommenced production in 2007. Strathmill Distillery was established in Speyside in 1891. Established on Islay in 1825 the Port Ellen distillery ceased production and was mothballed in 1983.
